S1: Ep 15- Where to live in Australia for expats | The Expat Reality Podcast
We loved recording this episode as we dive into the other side of expat life, a side that is often overlooked. While moving abroad can feel like a fresh start, we discuss whether expats are generally happier leading an expat life, as grief and guilt leaving loved ones behind often catches up with us over time.
We chat about what some of our followers told us about their current dilemmas as expats in Australia, and we also discuss how our love for travel has shaped our path for trying to fit into the 9-5 lifestyle and as an expat trying to fit into living in a new country.
Listen to the end as we talk about towns and cities we have considered moving to in Australia (and tips for how to decide where to live regionally vs in a city), as well as tips for how to embrace life as an expat and live each day to the fullest, if you’re feeling unsettled, like many of us are.

    I've spent a lot of time in that area, so know all the locations well. A pity you didn't show Nellies Glen (which is right next to the blue pool), much more picturesque. Much admiration that you went through all the hassle of getting drone permits for those waterfall shots. Cheers,

    Interesting. My SIBO started when I moved from New Zealand to Germany. Had a lot of stress during that time, also I think a course of antibiotics due to tonsillitis. That was 15 years ago. Got worse after travelling Vietnam (loved it, ate everything, constant diarrhoea though). Got worse again after catching some bug in Morocco. I'm studying to become a naturopath now, the whole experience was so debilitating and frustrating, I want to help people who face the same issues.

    Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm on day two of my own protocol with a semi-elemental diet. So far I feel good except for some mild herxheimer Symptoms (brain fog and fatigue). Still better than before. Bloating has gone down significantly. My tongue has cleared up, no coating. I also take Saccharomyces cerevisiae, some herbs to increase digestive activity and biofilm disruptors. Still drinking coffee. Doing belly massages and lots of walking also helps. Going to introduce antibacterial extracts soon and then see how it goes. I'm planning a hybrid approach where I will slowly fade I out the ED meals. I mix my own, it tastes okay, a bit like formula, but I add different aromas (honey, cinnamon, vanilla, small! amounts of cocoa, tahini or peanut butter).

    I live in Perth, Australia, moving back to Scotland, having just been back, no issues with public transport at all. I went on it often and took a train to Fort William from Edinburgh Though I must say when I was in London which was only once 30 years ago, I couldnt believe how rude people were on the train in London. Thats a whole other ballgame. My son is treated terriblby here in Perth at work. No need at all for that anywhere. I cant afford a house here as the prices are terrible now and the rental market is just as bad if not worse. There's great thing about both countries and terrible things too. My aircon has been on 24?7 for months. It's been a very long hot summer. The heat is as bad as the freezing cold. in a different way. You can't take your dog anywhere here, This is for anyone thingking the grass is greener here and its simply not. I can understand your heart being in England. I hope you've settled well again here and have no regrets. I really enjoyed your podcast. Its great to see someone else's perspective who has tried to go back. Maybe the fact that I have a huge great family to go home to really helps and they're all doing so well and is a major draw card, other than Bonny Scotland.itself! They are two completely different cultures I've met both amazingly lovely people here and very nasty abusive ones too.. I've lived here for 19 years, Ive enjoyed the beach and pool etc, but a tree change, mountains and old building are much more apealing to me now at 52. No regrets either way. I work in aged care and I'm a hairdresser to trade, so no issues with local work. I think Its great that you're open to all kinds of options on your journey. I can completely relate. All the best! You seem like a great team. 😊

    Britain is a great place if you are wealthy, if you are at the bottom of the ladder not so good especially now after the good times which are not coming back. I moved to Australia and there are many problems ( the heat for one) but people are a better off here, although affording a house is a challenge now since inflation kicked in and there is a dire shortage at present. If you are a couple with good jobs and are careful you can build a new 4 bedroom 2 bathroom, two car garage beautiful modern home with modern appliances.

    Super issues from a baby boomer who spent 20 years working in Australia & 15 in UK (10 in my 20s & 5 in my 50s). My UK public sector occupational pension is index linked but the Australian Tax Office count it as "overseas income" not superannuation. So it is taxed more than super. If it was a private pension I could have transferred it to an Australian Super Fund with less tax. But UK public sector pensions are generally not transferable as the fund might be "virtual" and paid out of tax revenue. I had sufficient UK NI to get a small UK Old Age Pension or OAP but Australia is one of the countries unlike US or EU where this is not index linked by UK Government. But overall I feel a guilty baby boomer to have an index linked occupational pension - Australia abolished these for public servants in the 1980s as unaffordable. Also Brits need to know Australian OAPs are means tested - 30% do not get one ,hence self funded retirees. By the way I had to give my Australian Tax File number to my Lloyds Bank Account in UK where my UK pensions are paid - ATO and HMRC seem to co-operate!

    We've been living in Australia for 5 years but cant afford to buy a house in Melbourne. My wife thinks we should move back to UK and prices much cheaper. Furthermore, the flight costs to come back to UK to visit family with kids is too much. My gut says coming back to UK is a bad idea though, but I dont want to stop my kids getting to know their families.

    • @LondonerInSydney
      @LondonerInSydney 4 місяці тому

      I think everyone is struggling at trying to buy a house right now - we certainly are too! UK has just gone into a recession so it's not going to look good there, but I totally understand how hard it is being away from family. Could your family ever come out to Australia to see you? Like you alternate it each year? I always feel like it's always on us to go back, but people won't come out to visit as much as we'd hope.

      Move back while you still can especially if you’re both British. My wife is Australian so it was never really an option for me. Family will never come and visit you here. My mother used to come over alone and now she has dementia in a nursing home. I will forever feel guilty for all the lost years I never saw her (20+ years) And now my kids are grown and have their own lives here it’s not an option. I have missed so much with my family over there.

    As an Aussie I have lived as an expat and have been granted residency in a 2 different countries over the last 40 years I know the feeling of being homesick but I always knew that it was my choice to go and live in those countries. As much as I missed home I knew that it was my choice to move there and that I could always move home. Unlike my ancestors who were dumped here by the British and had zero choice to return and see their families. Sorry I dont have a lot of sympathy for poms who come here and want to go home when they dont like it. Think about it in the context of its now only a 24hr flight compared to having no option to return or at best a voyage that lasted 6 months.

    Normal stools is a hudge indication that your bowel movement has normalised, get a calprotectin test done and see if your markers are in range. Wild oregano oil is a good shout. Ive started the elemental diet today and im hoping it solves my issues in the least amount of time. Im using absorb plus element.

      Oh good luck! Since I did this protocol, I now only drink spring water (not from the tap or filtered), and eat basically red meat, eggs, avocado and basic veggies. This has controlled it a bit. I don't drink alcohol anymore. Basically when you finish the diet, I doubt you'll be able to go back to eating everything again if you want to control it. Good luck!
